My first crash: Nigel Havers
The first accident I had was near Newmarket in my first car, a Ford Anglia that I shared with my brother. I was waiting at a level crossing when there was a bang.
I had been hit by a guy who hadn’t seen my brake lights. He was French and had no insurance. I had to pay for the repairs — he f***** off to Paris. I wasn’t hurt really — just a sprained wrist.
A few years later I was in Suffolk visiting my parents in my E-type Jaguar.
My mother was strict about dinner being at 8.30pm. I had been in the pub about 10 miles away and was nipping back through the country lanes in a bit of a rush.
I took a corner and realised I wasn’t going to make it — I was going too fast.\
I went so wide I crossed into the other lane, but luckily for me the oncoming driver coming the other was in a similar situation — so far off course he was on my side of the road.
We passed each other with rather silly grins.
