Two men are fighting for their lives and another 4 are seriously ill in a London hospital after being poisoned in a drug trial. The girlfriend of one of them said she had barely recognised him because his head was so swollen.

The six, all paid volunteers, had reacted badly to the drug, which is formulated to treat chronic inflammatory conditions.

The drug has caused the volunteers’ immune systems to attack their vital organs. It also emerged today that because of the action of the drug, which is designed to kick-start a defective immune system, it should never have been given to volunteers with a healthy immune system in the first place.
