As Crime Soars in Portland, Their New State of the Art Prison Stands Empty

Filed under: Business, Law, Really Stupid, Security — Posted by Fancy Pants on March 16th, 2006

The new Wapato jail in Portland, Oregon is a brand new state of the art facility. And, as Portland experiences an explosion in crime, this new state of the art facility stands empty. No inmate has ever even set foot in the jail.

Why? Because they blew their financial wad on the jail, which took $59 million to build, and now they can’t afford to run it!

Explains Portland Sheriff Bernie Guisto, “We held a ceremony, cut the ribbon — then locked the doors We have a brand-new jail sitting here empty, and I don’t have a good answer when the public asks me, ‘Why was it built if there was no plan to operate it?’ ”

Added Guisto, “Even I get tired of telling people how dumb we are.”
